LED Light

Light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are increasingly used for lighting with very high brightness.

LEDs present many advantages over incandescent lights and fluorescent lights.
  • Higher efficiency than incandescent bulbs, and not affected by shape and size, unlike Fluorescent light bulbs or tubes.
  • Small size: LEDs are very small (smaller than 2 mm2) and easily populated onto printed circuit boards.
  • On/Off time: LEDs light up instantly, a typical red indicator LED will achieve full brightness in microseconds.
  • Cycling: LEDs are ideal for use in applications that are subject to frequent on-off cycling, unlike fluorescent lamps that burn out more quickly when cycled frequently, or HID lamps that require a long time before restarting.
  • Dimming: LEDs can very easily be dimmed either by pulse-width modulation or lowering the forward current.
  • Cool light: LEDs radiate very little heat in the form of IR that can cause damage to sensitive objects or fabrics.
  • Lifetime: LEDs can have a relatively long life of 35,000 to 50,000 hours of useful life, while fluorescent tubes typically are rated at about 10,000 to 15,000 hours, and incandescent light bulbs at 1,000¨C2,000 hours.
  • Shock resistance: LEDs, being solid state components, are difficult to damage with external shock, unlike fluorescent and incandescent bulbs which are fragile.
  • Toxicity: LEDs do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps.
High efficiency and high power LEDs have been developed for lighting and illumination. Now LEDs are used as street lights and in other architectural lighting, for automotive lighting on cars, motorcycles and on bicycle lights, backlighting for LCD televisions and laptop displays, and for decorative lighting as indoor/outdoor decor, limousines, cargo trailers, conversion vans, cruise ships, RVs, boats, automobiles, and utility trucks.
LEDs are very energy-efficient and so more eco-friendly generating much less CO2 emissions than incandescent lights and fluorescent lights. If changing all incandescent bulbs for new LEDs, A building's carbon footprint from lighting can be reduced by 68%.
