The simplest heat pump water heater (HPWH) is the ambient air-source unit, which removes heat from surrounding air while exhaust cool air for room air cooling as an additional benefit. And some units can be converted into both cooling and heating air conditioner.
Best energy savings are accomplished when temperatures are mild or warm, especially for space heating, because HPWH efficiency and capacity drop as temperature drops, avoid applications where and when the ambient air is very cold.
